Substack - A new home for TuxByte
Hello everyone,
you may know my old blog which has been published under the domain tuxbyte.com. After more than 7 years, I’ve decided to delete my blog in 2020 because I didn’t had the time to manage my WordPress installation, my daily life and writing good articles and tutorials.
When COVID-19 became the most discussed topic in 2021 and 2022, I started to miss writing. At the end of 2022 I looked up different ways to pick up writing again, however I never truly felt the desire to maintain my own WordPress installation and tinker with all the plugins and stuff again. I’m maintaining servers and software most of the day so writing articles (in a term of a hobby) shouldn’t also feel as “work”, right?
And than there is Substack …
Everyone knows Medium. I checked several times if Medium may be an option for me as well. However, I personally don’t like ads. With adblockers, anti-adblockers and anti-anti-adblockers, I feel like the time for ads is over. We all subscribe to different services like Netflix, Spotify and so on to get away from linear services and their constant interruptions with ads / commercial breaks. IMHO reading should be a part of that, too.
After some browsing and searching the web, I finally stumbled upon Substack. Substack is the perfect fit in my case. No ads, but a streamlined experience (for writers and readers) with the possibility to enable subscriptions for a revenue instead of ads.
Substack is good, but not perfect
But even though Substack enables me to write again, Substack isn’t perfect. For example I would love to lower the price of an subscription to something like $2 or even as low as $1. Unfortunately, the absolute minimum is $5.
But besides this, I will have to see how Substack does fit in my writing flow. I’ve just started to migrate an older blog post from my archive. So far the experience has been really good.
What’s next?
I have a lot of good and still up to date articles from my old blogs archive, which I feel are worth it to be rereleased on Substack. To ensure that there are fully up to date and meet my personal quality criterias, I will of course edit them when needed.
Besides rereleasing old articles I will write new ones as well of course. You can expect articles and tutorials about Linux, Unix and some gaming every now and then just like back in 2020 on my old blog. I’m excited to look forward and hopefully some articles and tutorials I’m writing are helpful to you.
